[Washington D.C., U.S.A ] Korean Arts Resonate in Washington

Korean culture came under the spotlight at the annual ‘Art All Night’, held in Washington DC. The event introduced modern Korean arts such as fine arts and performance to an audience of about 800, and provided opportunities for local arts institutions and artists to connect.

The first program was the Open Studio, in which artists introduced modern ceramics and demonstrated the creation of simple pieces while engaging the audience in conversation. Local artists who attended the program expressed their wishes to participate in the Cultural Center’s next exhibition, even though they were not Korean.

Then, a performance of Korean traditional gayageum (by Shin Song-eun) and modern dance (by Kim Bo-gyeong) provided a moving experience. The message of the performance, that careless words spoken without thought can cause lasting wounds, resonated in the modern world and left a strong impression on the audience.

Young Korean American artist Julia Chon presented a participatory mural on the wall of the Cultural Center titled ‘K-Style', inspired by pop art and traditional Korean culture, which was completed with audience participation. The mural was a hit among families with children, who proudly took pictures in front of their handiwork after completing the mural with various Korean icons such as hangul, Korean food and hanbok.

Visitors to the event said that they found the program, which brought together modernity and tradition, engaging and interesting. They appreciated the wide range of activities for families, friends and couples, as well as the opportunities to participate in the creation of an artwork, and meet the artists in person.
